I'm trying to turn my sleeping schedule around into something semi-normal, meaning that I've been awake for 32 hours straight and am planning on being up for another 8, at least. I'm not at my best, in other words.

Even so:

[personal profile] senmut gave me a "g" , which turned out to be surprisingly difficult, but I prevailed!
An alarming amount of these are in Swedish. Sorry. Or actually, no, not sorry, but...sympathetic, perhaps?

First out is Andreas Johnson's "Glorious". Because that's exactly what it is. Simple and magnificent.

Second is Helen Sjöholm's "Gabriella's Song". There's a story behind this one, as it's basically the pivotal point of the movie "Så som i himmelen" ("As it is in Heaven"). I wasn't very impressed with the movie itself, from what I remember, but Helen Sjöholm herself plays Gabriella - a victim of spousal abuse - and this performance is her standing up to her husband and finding new confidence. I think that's all the context needed to appreciate the scene.
I'm really just a Helen Sjöholm fan. Here's the studio version for those who are interested.

Helen Sjöholm was also the star of the musical Kristina från Duvemåla, which is where the next song comes from. It's sung by Peter Jöback, though - who has a golden voice and is cute as a button. Of course, since it's from a Swedish musical about Swedish immigrants, it's about death and despair, but what can you do. It's pretty, at least: "Guldet blev till sand" ("The gold turned into sand").

Next is "Gravitation" ("Gravity") from the early days of Kent, when they were young and still somewhat indie pop. They sound so charmingly rough and yet the melody's as beautiful as they always tend to be.

And, finally: "Glory of love" with Peter Cetera. Because when I was a kid, I would always bring my walkman on car trips (and, later, wherever I went, to the annoyance of anyone who wanted to communicate with me). My uncle had given me two Peter Cetera cassette tapes that I would listen to obsessively, way past the point when they were frayed and tangled. I loved this song. I would try to figure out what the lyrics meant, singing along in fake English (I was eight!) and imagining all sorts of epic adventures. I still love it.

I was going to write more, but to heck with it. I shouldn't be up.

[personal profile] senmut gave me a "P", so here goes:

Bruce Springsteen - Paradise - from "The Rising" - his 9/11 tribute album. Just so haunting and desolate, it's hard not to cry when I hear it.

Two steps from Hell - Protectors of the Earth - Two steps from Hell continue to make my days a little more epic. I love the rhythm of this.

Garbage - Push it - reminds me of being a teenager and hating everybody.

Texas - Put your arms around me - I love Sharleen Spiteri's soulful, honey-like voice and I love the sort of quivering, slow build-up of this song.

Kent - Passagerare ("Passenger") - I was a Kent fan for quite a while. They're a special band for me, because their sound, to me, embodies what growing up in Sweden was like. Something about the sound and the lyrics - something beautiful, but unpolished, cold and a bit bitter. It's about finding beauty in unemployment and concrete, I guess, at least to me. They came from an industrial town, just like me, and that's been a running theme of Jocke Berg's lyrics since...ages back. I don't know if it's just him or if the rest of the band also have trouble divorcing their hometown. I just recently came across this song (Rebecka Törnqvist is another favorite voice of mine) and here it is again - about going back to where you grew up and realize that you've grown away from it and the melancholy that that brings. It's kind of exactly what I felt when I visited my hometown last year.

I was given the letter M by [personal profile] senmut

Eurythmics - Missionary Man (One of the coolest songs ever and Annie Lennox' voice is in a class of its own.)

Kent - Musik Non Stop  (I just love how smooth it is. And the line "I quit my job to catch some sun." It's in Swedish, so you won't hear it, but now you know it's there.)

Helen Sjöholm - Min Astrakan (from the musical Kristina från Duvemåla) (From a musical based on Wilhelm Moberg's The Emigrants. She sings about her apple tree back home. Beautiful, heartbreaking and I've always found Helen's voice so captivating and full of life.)

Two steps from Hell - Master of shadows (Because sometimes epicness is needed)

Lisa Miskovsky - Mary (I just like it!)
